2.4Ghz transmitter rules for 2008

With the new 2.4Ghz technology taking over the sport, we are receiving lots of questions about how Tx Control is going to deal with it. Dave Hayfield and Sheila Bransfield run Tx Control at Wings & Wheels and here they give chapter and verse on how things will be run at our event.

"Obviously, we are not going to be able to check the frequency of the transmitter but if we are involved in a public event we do need to know what is going on. We need to know who is flying and when, and to see their paperwork for insurance etc - which requires transmitters to be booked in with a reference number and an indication of which flying slots are allocated to the flyer, so the 'peg on Tx' when in use will still be employed.

Each transmitter must be booked into TX Control as usual and issued with a token which will release the TX to the flyer when needed for flying. The number allocated to these transmitters will be from, for example, 200, 201, 202 and so on upwards issued on a first-come-first-served basis. The 35Mhz transmitters can be booked in along with the 2.4Ghz but the token will have the checked channel marked on it as usual.

Obviously this will require a separate pegboard providing a peg to accommodate the 2.4Ghz Tx's but no frequencies will have to be verified and the Tx will only have its booking-in number which will be used to identify when it is in use and who is using it. We will be using a board with around 30 pegs. These pegs do not require numbering because the issued pegs will have the flyer's Tx number on the token on the hook beneath it. The pegs will be coloured or marked so that they can be identified as belonging to Wings & Wheels (some flyers keep their local club peg attached to their Tx so we do not want any confusion!)"

2008 Displays Roll In

We are already receiving requests to fly at Wings & Wheels 2008 from all over the place and each request is being considered carefully.  One of the first this year was from Jens Van Dorpe from Belgium. Jens is 19 years old and a rising star in European display flying. He is hoping to fly his 110" Yak 54 powered by a DA100 on BMB tuned pipes that pulls the model around the sky in a spectacular freestyle routine set to music. With pilots of the calibre of Jens at the show, it looks like being a year to remember!

2008 on Target

Preparations are well under way for next year's show with some changes being made along the way. Trade forms will be sent out in the New Year and, although entrances prices have not changed for 2008, we have made some changes to child prices to make things a bit fairer for larger families. This basically means that if you bring three or four children between the ages of five and sixteen, you will only pay entrance fees for two of them. Hopefully this will ease the financial burden a bit on those arriving in larger vehicles with several children.
